Discover the hidden paradise of San Blas, an archipelago of 365 islands and keys located on the Caribbean coast of Panama. This tropical paradise is known for its crystal-clear waters, fine white-sand beaches, incredible marine diversity, and its native community: the Guna. The islands of San Blas are of coral origin and are characterized by their shallow waters, making them ideal for snorkeling. The water temperature is warm throughout the year, with an average of 28°C. Among its marine diversity, we can find over 200 species of fish, 130 species of coral, starfish, turtles, rays, shells, octopuses, and lobsters. It is also an important habitat for marine birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and seagulls.
In San Blas, the Guna community opens the doors to their world of millennia-old traditions and a deep connection with nature. The Guna live on islands and keys surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, where artisanal fishing is a fundamental part of their daily life. Fishing is not only a source of food but also a way to connect with their environment and preserve their traditions. A unique characteristic of Guna society is its matriarchal organization, where women play a central role in decision-making and cultural transmission. They are the guardians of traditions and community history, and their wisdom and leadership are highly valued. Guna traditions focus on harmony with the environment and preservation of their culture. One of the most notable is the creation of “molas,” colorful textiles that represent the community’s identity and history. At the same time, the sale of molas is their main economic income.
